Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface will not participate at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) via injury, in an additional setback to Nigeria's preparations.

Boniface is the newest member of the Super Eagles squad to suffer an injury prior to the
tournament, which kicks off on 13 January in Abidjan. See

OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi has been invited to substitute Boniface, until the
approval of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) and accord with the
player's French Ligue 1 club.

Victor now joins a developing list of Nigeria players who have been required to miss Afcon 2023 through injury, including Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi and Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi. See

Wilfred’s Leicester team-mate Kelechi Iheanacho, who was absent at the Super Eagles training camp, is estimated to join up with the remainder of the squad in Ivory Coast.

Giant miss for Nigeria

Boniface has been in fine form for his German club with 10 goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga’s recent season, and is in contention to be named the Bundesliga rookie of the month for a fifth successive time.

Victor sustained the injury in Nigeria's training camp in Abu Dhabi and was missing from the Super Eagles 2-0 friendly loss to Guinea on Monday.

The Leverkusen striker shared his displeasure with his fans on X, having also formerly missed the Under -20 African Cup of Nations via injury.

Nigeria begins their hunt for a fourth Afcon trophy in a Group A game against Equatorial Guinea on 14 January.

The most populous nation in Africa will also face hosts Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau in the group phase.
